MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
The Central Arizona Dental Hygienists' Society is the largest component of
the Arizona State Dental Hygienists' Association. The CADHS has been
innovative and energized over the past few years and is reaching out to both
the community at large and the community of dental hygienists. The CADHS
component should be very proud of it's commitment to dental hygiene
students, dental hygienists and the profession of dental hygiene.
Discerning CADHS members know that there are many opportunities throughout
the year for continuing education in Arizona. I invite you to attend a
meeting that is designed specifically for hygienists, but would also benefit
other members of the dental team. The Arizona State Dental Hygienists'
Association presents it's Annual Scientific Conference for hygienists every
August. While the temperature's sore in Arizona during the month of August
we provide a cool atmosphere at the authentic Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa
with affordable room rates, ADHA member benefit tuition, discounted golf and
the world renowned Red Door Spa. This is a meeting designed to gather your
friends and colleagues and enjoy a weekend of comaraderie, energized
learning, networking and FUN. In addition to 15 hours of continuing
education we provide breakfast, lunch, an Exhibit Expo "Hat Party"
Reception, door prizes, Dive in Movie night, sponsored by Sonicare, live
music, sponsored by Paradise Dental Technologies and a FREE course on Sunday
for ADHA members, sponsored by Hygientown, ALL for $18 a credit hour for
members.
With the current hygiene "market" in Arizona of six existing dental hygiene
programs graduating approximately 120 students and at least one more
starting this fall, approximately 150 licensure by credential hygienists
coming to Arizona every year, dental practices declaring bankruptcy and the
loss of and lack of employment for hygienists, we felt it timely to include
courses that addressed those concerns. Devon Hansen, a motivational speaker
will talk about "Humor and Anger in the Workplace. Ms. Hansen spoke and
counseled the survivors of the Oklahoma City bombing. Howard Farran, DDS,
is the founder of Hygientown and Dentaltown, an Arizona dentist, and a tell
it like it is kind of guy who will provide insight and advice on "How to be
a Hygienist in Today's Market". The always knowledgeable and entertaining
Betsy Reynolds, RDH, MS is back for her encore with "Headliners: Breaking
News and It's Affect on Health Care". Lori Brogna, RDH will discuss the
"Dental Aspects of Weight Loss Surgeries" and Catherine Fairfield, RDH, will
share with us the "Secrets to Success: Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy.
This is a power packed weekend that offers not only outstanding continuing
educations and activities for networking, but an atmosphere that allows
relaxation if you prefer. We hope you will consider this amazing meeting,
that is designed for YOU, the dental hygienist.

So much is happening in our summer heat. You would think that we are hibernating, but that is not the case with CADHS.
Use this as a home page for your computer.
Important information for all CADHS members is to check out the event calendar on the website for fundraising information. We are working with Joshua Slepak from Liberty Mutual and the board has picked an easy project that will benefit you, your family, friends, and patients. Follow Joshua’s directions. Copy off 10 applications and pass them on to interested individuals that would like a comparison on insurance rates. My husband is getting a quote on insurance for his Harley Davidson as we speak. The deadline is September 23rd so please start working!!!! Thanks.
Stop by the CADHS booth at the Wigwam and we will guarantee you will smile. Hopefully you will join us in fun.
On Saturday, August 22nd at the Wigwam luncheon, CADHS will be honoring Betsy R. Davis for her service as Dental Hygienist for 67 years. What a lady and still loving what she does.
If you have not joined CADHS face book please do so. A nice way to match a face with a name and it is fun. Thanks to Sonja Bell-Rabb for getting us up and going.
October 24th ,at our annual House of Delegates, we will be having CADHS elections.
We need members to step up and serve. Some board positions require more time than others so just ask and we will let you know what is involved. If you have a little time to donate to your component please let us know. Contact Joanne at low-n-fat@cox.net
Would like a full slate of individuals running for positions. We also want to add the position of advertisement council. CADHS members have so much talent so why not share a few hours of your leadership skills and creative thinking with us.
October is Dental Hygiene month and we are having an OPEN HOUSE to celebrate our members and their profession. Cake and punch will be served.

The Dogs Days of Summer…….AUGUST…….summer is suppose to be over as schools are opening and everyone is gearing up for the “start” of the year at least on the educational calendar. Still it is hot and humid; Mother Nature didn’t get the memo! As the school year begins, and hygiene students return or continue, it is time once again to ramp up the mentor program. Last year saw a successful program at Rio Salado and this year Phoenix College students have requested inclusion in the fun and support. Mentors, with minimal time and effort, may have a tremendous impact on the direction and continued advancement of our profession. Presented with the modeling of ethical treatment and integrity, new graduates are starting out at an elevated level of professionalism. If mentors generate respect from their students, they may also be more inclined to join ADHA, helping to stimulate membership. In the words of Toni Adams, ADHA’s Mentor of the Year,
“A mentor can be anyone who has a positive influence over a long or short period of time. The mentor can be older or younger than you. Chances are that all of you have mentored another person at some time or other, whether you know it or not.
If you are a mentor, be grateful for the opportunity and the privilege. It is not often that people actually ask for your opinion and listen as you give it.”
If you are interested in being LISTENED to, please contact me to be a mentor.
